Module 4.1|What is Airdrop
What is Airdrop?
In the crypto world, an airdrop is the free distribution of tokens or coins to multiple wallet addresses. This marketing strategy is commonly used by blockchain projects to:
Promote awareness
Increase user engagement
Incentivize participation in their ecosystem
Airdrops can quickly build a user base and generate excitement around a new project.
Evolution of Airdrops
Airdrops have evolved over the years. One of the earliest notable examples was Auroracoin in 2014, which aimed to distribute digital currency to all citizens of Iceland. However, the Uniswap airdrop in 2020 set a new standard by distributing 400 UNI tokens to every wallet that had previously interacted with the exchange. This airdrop was valued at over $1,000 at the time, highlighting the significant impact such campaigns can have on user engagement and project visibility.
